The internet and email- week 3
This week i read over Study Guide 2 which included information relating to the internet and email. It gave a lot of background information into how it all works. I decided to blog about that study guide in regards to the different terms and basics of it all so that i am able to differentiate between them all which i think is important for me to then be able to build upon my knowledge.
What is the internet?
The internet is a series of numerous globally interconnected computer networks. The computers are able to communicate on various networks because of the ‘Transmission control protocol/ Internet protocol’, which is pretty much the ‘language’ of the internet.
Internet services:
The internet provides many services. The most common being the world wide web (WWW) and E-mail. In the case of the WWW, the server is acomputer running software that responds to request for web pages and other resources such as pictures, sounds and video. Where as email operates in a more complex way involving many types of clients and servers.
Email:
Email is the sending and receiving of mail electronically via the internet. A recent alternative to email software is that of the WWW based email such as hotmail.
How Email works:
You create a message and send it. The message will first go to your Internet service provider’s mail server which then sends it to the recipient’s mail server, on the way your message will pass through several servers, each reading the domain name in order to guide it to the next server.
Attachments:
Email can be used to transfer files across the internet by attaching them to an email.
Viruses:
A computer virus is a program that invades your computer system, hides there and makes copies of itself. Viruses spread when you forward on an infected email, launch an infected application or use a disk to start up your computer that is affected with a virus. Some viruses are programmed specifically to damage the data on your computer by corrupting programes, deleting files or even erasing your entire hard disk.
I Believe that the internet and email will be very important to me to be confident with and understand in my future profession as a primary school teacher. The internet will be able to provide me with new teaching methods and different resources, and email will be something that staff members within the school will be able to communicate through.
